We purchased two of these. They rusted within one month of purchase. Unfortunately we were just past the Amazon return windown when I decided to try to exchange them.

We leave it outside because I'm not going to lug two tricycles from the back patio around the house to the garage every day. We also leave our Schwinn bikes outside, and they don't rust.

If it rusts within one month where we live (San Diego, a dry climate without one day of rain in that month), I can't imagine what they're going to look like in a year or two.

Too bad I didn't know this ahead of time, never would have purchased them.

I've had this model for about 1 year now. Purchased from Amazon. I have the pink one, which I think looks the best of the three. Daughter was 2yrs old when she first got it, but she wasn't able to ride it until about 2 1/2 years old. People are always asking where we got it from. The only issue we've had is that it can be a challenge to pump air into the tires since the spokes are so close together. We bought this trike in pink for our 3.5 year old daughter and she really loves it. She calls it her "big bike." I will say that the quality level of this trike is pretty good - not up to the par of some of Schwinn's beach-bikes (or their two-wheel bikes for that matter) but I really wouldn't expect that for the price. One issue that cropped up is that the chrome wheels do seem to be very rust-prone. I noticed this when I first pumped up the tires and even the moisture from my hands made some rather "permanent" fingerprints on the chrome. The chrome handlebars and wheel-covers don't seem to suffer from this, though.

I did read the other reviews here and wanted to address some issues that they brought up. First, the tires - when I ordered I was afraid that the bike we would receive would have the "flat tire" syndrome. We received the bike with deflated tires, so after getting it, I looked under the inner tube inside the tire to make sure that there was that rubber ribbon installed around the wheels to protect the inner tube from the spoke screws inside the wheels. It was there. So I inflated the tires to just over 30 psi and we've had no issues with deflating/flat tires to date. If you purchase this trike, make sure it has that ribbon. Incidentally, if you need a source for purchasing 12 or 10 inch inner tubes, Google those terms and take your pick.

Second, the packaging - it is packaged pretty tightly, but the components in the package we received were pretty well protected. The main body was bubble wrapped and the ends had foam around them, while the other components (minus the tires) were also bubble wrapped. The wheel covers had cardboard taped to them for protection. Plus the back wheel assembly had plastic "throw-away" caps at the ends to protect them and hold them tightly within the box. It should be noted that Amazon ships the box by itself with no other protection. Our trike wasn't damaged in any way, so perhaps the Schwinn folks have solved this problem (or maybe we got lucky).

I would expect this trike to last a few years and then either rust (the wheels) or be forgotten about. Though I do think that with some regular care and maintenance (and occasional "custom" work) this trike could last 10-20 years in the right hands. Overall, my kid(s) enjoy this trike enough to justify some occasional hassles. Got it for about $50 on Amazon and it's reasonably priced compared to the $40 plastic piece of crap I saw at Walmart. My husband put it together fairly easily and I've never seen the look of such joy on my son's face until he saw it. This bike is great! Not only is it the envy of all the kids and parents it is also great if you have a taller, bigger kid. My son is 2 but is already 3 ft tall (he takes after his 6 ft something fit dad). Other trikes are too small, he can hardly sit in them. I bought this as a Christmas present for our 16 month old daughter. She is still getting the hang of it but enjoys it. Her legs are still a little short for the pedals but she tries to use them and will scoot the thing about.
The build quality is what failed to get it that last star. It's pretty good over all. It seems sturdy, has real tires and a luster to the paint. My only issue is the steering. The fork tube has no bearings, instead it passes through a plastic bushing in the frame and that clamp you can see in the pictures, which hold the handle bars in place is also the only thing preventing the forks from coming out and due to this design it is nearly impossible to eliminate all sideways play in the forks. Now I understand this is a small childs trike and not designed to take a great deal of weight or miles and miles of use but had Schwinn used a threaded tube for the forks and have a nut on the top for fixing and adjustment instead of relying on the handlebar clamp I would have given it a 6 out of 5. You may think I am being picky and maybe I am but really I bought Schwinn for the style, AND the build quality and I found this part of the trike cheap and was very disappointed by it. Doing it right might cost a little more but if the Trike had been $10-$15 more expensive as a result I would have happily paid it to have something well make througout.

The side of the box says it is for kids 26-38 inches. I dont think this is correct, our daughter is 35" at 2 years and can barely reach the pedals. She can pedal, but it is very difficult so we are going to get some pedal blocks which I think should fix things.

Overall it seems like a good trike. The main reason I got it was because it is lower to the ground and more stable. We have a moderate sized hill that the kids go zooming down and a standard trike just isnt stable enough.
